The Milkyway, Galaxies, and the Universe

presented by Dr. Mike INglis

7:00 PM Saturday, June 9, 2012
The Ross School

The Milky Way, our home galaxy, is filled with innumerable stars, nebulae and clusters, but there is still a lot we do not know. How big is it? How many stars does it contain? And what lies at its center? Yet, the Milky Way is only one galaxy in a possibly infinite sea of galaxies. In this lively and well-illustrated talk, Dr. Mike Inglis, astronomer at SCCC, will discuss our current knowledge about our home amongst the stars, and journey even further out towards the cosmic horizon, discussing on the journey all the myriad types of galaxies that we could encounter. Following the lecture and If skies are clear join us for a tour of the night sky with Montauk Observatory telescopes.
