Heroes & Beasts

presented by Prof. Sean Tvelia

7:00 PM Thursday, July 14, 2016
Amagansett Library
215 Main St. Amagansett, NY

As a cofounder of Montauk Observatory and a faculty member in the Earth & Space Science department at Suffolk County Community College I have led countless star parties across Long Island. Inevitably at each of these events participants ask about constellation mythology—the stories behind the stars. Although the myths themselves are fascinating and often involve stories packed with romance and action, equally fascinating is how these myths are shared between cultures—which in many cases are separated by thousands of miles and even entire oceans. In this presentation Prof. Tvelia will discuss the origins of astronomical mythology as well as possible clues to how these myths were shared between geographically separated cultures.
